ATM Adaptation for Video

There has been much attention given lately to which ATM Adaptation Layer (AAL) to use for real–time video transmission (both interactive and distributive). Originally, AAL 1 was suggested for constant bit–rate services and AAL 2 for variable bit–rate (albeit no. 2 never got defined). Now also AAL 5 is considered for the task. This paper contains a discussion on the role of ATM adaptation for video, and an evaluation of AAL 1 and 5 in light of the conclusions. A proposal for a new AAL that may support video (and audio) generically is presented. Most attention is given to the detection of data–deletions caused by cell loss.
